Vetiver is a tropical grass (Chrysopogon Zizanioides) native to India and originally from Tamil Nadu. Today, however, 80% of its essential oil comes from Haiti. Worldwide production is estimated at 250 tons per year, making it the most produced perfume ingredient in the world. The best essential oil is extracted from roots that are 18 to 24 months old. Like Patchouli and Sandalwood essential oils, the scent develops and matures with age. La Réunion essence is considered to be the one that produces the highest quality and is known as “Bourbon Vetiver”, with Haiti and Java the next highest quality.
