Concept

Following his honeymoon to South Africa, German designer, Sebastian Herkner, was inspired by all the aspects, elements and shades he encountered across so many areas. The Aarde (which means earth) is a representation of this; of the layering that exists culturally, demographically and in the nature and light of Africa. The Aarde has subtly overlapping layers with different depths to create the play with light and minerality that Sebastian saw in the natural landscape and wanted to represent. The earthy colours (brown, red, sandstone) used in this range are very much part of the story Sebastian wanted to communicate.

BRAND INFO

Founded in 2014, Indigenus has collaborated with South Africa’s top designers to create planters that are art pieces in their own right. In 2022, they expanded their collaborations to include internationally renowned designers. Committed to sustainability and luxury quality, Indigenus aims to create planters that last a lifetime. Through years of refinement and setting up a world-class in-house manufacturing facility, they ensure the highest quality craftsmanship. All materials are sustainably sourced, and each planter is handmade, showcasing Indigenus's exceptional craftsmanship. Each range of planters is unique, illustrating the transformative impact of sculptural planters on architecture and landscapes. The stable, grounded designs made with natural materials express a close connection to the earth, reflecting our relationship with the natural world. All Indigenus planters include a liner designed for planting. These liners are proportionate to the size of the planters and feature a water reservoir at the base, allowing roots to grow into it. Through capillary action, water is drawn up into the soil. Water levels in the reservoir can be monitored with the cap gauge, and a plug in the liner must be removed if the planter is exposed to rainfall. The drawings illustrate the sizes and capacities of these liners.
